Poptopia
Poptopia! show @ Billabong Pub, Hallandale
SWEET HOLY FUCK, INDIE ROCK IN FLORIDA. Last night at the Billabong Pub in a forlorn strip mall sandwiched between the railroad tracks and I-95 in the trailer-park and pawnshop slums west of Hallandale, indie rock lived or something in the land of latin techno and grunge tribute bands. The New Graduates are fronted by an emo type in a "Fucking New York City" t-shirt, with the shows' organizer on drums. The band loves the Feelies and New Order.
There were:
women in old 1984-vintage U2 muscle shirts and
art-major glasses,
a Jewish guy with a Peter Hook jones filling in on bass.
DIY t-shirted guys djing between sets with crates of Squeeze elpees,
Records records and Smiths and Chappaquiddick Skyline CDs,
affable guys with shaved heads and
their wives, blond and serene by the foosball table.
(Indie rock men make passes at girls who wear glasses.)
Everyone's in a band (the guys) or with a band (the women), and spaghetti straps and bad dye jobs and Kathleen Hanna 1994 haircuts are still an aesthetic. Surf rock! Surf rock with Stereolab bits! A photographer in a black t-shirt and jeans and a big ass and long hair fanned out and I'll bet anything she's vegan!
I scribble some of this down and guys with bands (they all have bands, and they're all guys) take me for someone with a zine and give me copies of their CDs and flyers and postcards for shows. Apart from the unusually high number of guys in Hawaiian shirts, this could be Minneapolis, Detroit, Chapel Hill, Cambridge, Portland or Halifax. Thanks, Poptopia Guy.

comments: The first of three bands in this list to feature drummer Copeletti (see Remember the Ocean and Whirlaway below), The New Graduates are the most-pop-minded of these acts, harking back to the days when alternative music was called college rock and R.E.M. had yet to lose its religion. Led by the soft-voiced singer Oenbrink, The New Graduates have released but one recording, 2000’s Train Song EP, but are currently working on a followup. The band often performs at Poptopia, the monthly local music showcase dreamed up by Copeletti in 1999 that’s now based at the Billabong Pub in Pembroke Park. Poptopia is always something to look forward to, as Copeletti’s tastes lean toward the most-creative, original acts on the scene: The Curious Hair, Bling Bling, Humbert and, of course, his own trio of bands.
